About
Hi there! My name is Dori Larbig and I’m the creator of MylarMistake. Thank you for visiting- it takes environmentally passionate people like you to help spread the word and take part in this Mylar-free movement.
I founded MylarMistake as a high school student in my hometown of Santa Barbara, California, driven by a fierce passion for the environment. Growing up as a competitive swimmer, surfer, and beach lifeguard, I have always been deeply connected to our ocean environment. During my time as an Ambassador Girl Scout (the highest level of Girl Scouts) in Troop 50886, I developed MylarMistake as part of my Gold Award community service project. The initiative involved over 80 hours of dedicated work and leadership of a team of equally passionate community members, resulting in the impactful project it is today.
The inspiration for MylarMistake came during a 2018 kayak excursion to Anacapa Island, one of the eight California Channel Islands, with my Girl Scout troop. Our kayak guide fished numerous Mylar balloons from the ocean, educating us on the severe impact these single-use balloons have on marine life and the local environment when released from the California mainland. This eye-opening experience motivated me to take action.
Now, as an Emergency Medical Technician and Economics student at UC Santa Barbara, I remain committed to this important project, continuously advocating for the protection of our environment.
Mylar balloons are a large contributing factor to the marine debris found in the Santa Barbara Channel. I realized that it is not common knowledge that Mylar balloons contribute to pollution in ocean environments. I decided I would like to help educate the public to use alternative practices, in fact, it’s a MISTAKE to even purchase them! …And, that is how MylarMistake was born!
